Ski Apache
This popular area ski resort offers 55 runs and 11 chairlifts and has a base elevation of 9,600 feet. There is a ski school offering lessons in alpine skiing/snowboarding. Beginners ski free with the purchase of lesson. Ski Apache is owned and operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe, and is open from Thanksgiving to late March, weather permitting. Smokey the Bear Ranger District
The Park was established to honor Capitan's favorite son Smokey, the little bear cub that was found near here with burned paws after a 17,000 acre forest fire in 1950. Featured in the visitor center are exhibits about forest health and forest fires. An outdoor exhibit features six of the vegetative life zones found in New Mexico, an outdoor amphitheatre, and the final resting place of Smokey Bear. Also located at the park is a playground, picnic area with group shelters and the original train depot for the Village of Capitan.
